North & South, the two opposite magnetic poles, the top and bottom of the world, two different cultures, etc.
Items in the shot:
* Recta DO150 compass: good quality, good accuracy, light and simple for a good price. I use it in combination with a handheld GPS.
* Map on page 330 (Arkansas, Louisiana) of Lannoo's carbook USA, 1996; 1:2,200,200 (Dutch version).
Shooting info:
On a table next to my pc. Light from two windows, one blocked + two diffusers to get rid of the glares and reflections on the compass.
Camera on a tripod, 10 second selftimer (to give me the chance to hold the diffusers), high angle.
Postprocessing:
* rotate 90 degrees CCW
* cropped
* noise reduction
* channel mixer to monochrome
R-10, R+90, B+20
* resampled
* USM 150%, 0.3px, 1treshold in Lab Mode on the Lightness channel
* RGB
* Save for the web
The colors sucked so I chose B&W.

Excellent attention to detail. I like how you've oriented both the map and the compass toward magnetic north. I also like your greyscale - you've used the entire range available to you and provide good visual contrast. I'm not sure you captured the "opposite" theme, however. Am I missing the point? A map and compass by design "go together" - they are not opposites. Perhaps a different challenge. |

This image doesn't appeal to me artistically, but it is well composed. |

Almost did this myself....and I thought no one would like it. You present it well. Focus is good, B&W works well for it. Good job. |

This image sort of follows my own submission in a North/South sort of fashion.
This is a very nice shot. Good detail. One thing I would attempt to do is to attempt to get rid of that small washed out spot on the top right of the compass, if looks like the plastic caught some flash(? ). |
