A cattle egret, working the back side of a pasture clearing burn, looking for toasted bugs. They burn the pastures in this area every couple of years to remove all the dead vegetation. That is a natural way of keeping things fresh. The Forestry Dept. finally figured that out about 10 years ago. The old folks and indians have been doing it for centuries, because it works, and it is good for the wildlife. If it goes long enough, the overburden will be so heavy that it will kill everything when it burns. This way, the grass will be popping up green and good to eat just a few days after the next rainy day.

Its cool how the heat distorts the background. Smart bird.

Neat story. Thanks for sharing it with us. Interesting image with the fire and the heat waves coming from it.

Makes a lovely picture with all those layers, and the white egrey is a great point of interest. The heat haze has a glass filter look.

That heat looks pretty scary. I'm surprised the Egret didn't have issues with the smoke, but maybe he was upwind of it.

In England, moorland is burned on a rotating basis, just like you describe. I really admire this photo - it conveys the feeling of intense heat so well. The addition of the Cattle Egret is the icing on the cake.
