Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa.

2009/01/05, 18:46.

Taken at 24mm. Used a 3-stop graduated neutral density filter and a 2-stop neutral density filter.

Latitude: 25°43'31.79"S
Longitude: 27°50'51.63"E
(Coordinates found using Google Earth)

It was raining when I shot this, but the light was so good I just had to keep shooting. I had to keep wiping the water off the ND filter using my shirt.

Lightroom: The light was excellent but the image had a yellow/orange tint (as a result of camera white balance) so I changed the white balance to auto which made the colours more natural. I used the landscape camera calibration profile to increase the contrast. Further contrast adjustments were done.

Photoshop: Noise Reduction. Cloned out some distracting lights among the trees. Darkened sky with a masked overlay layer. Darkened parts of sky and trees with a masked curves layer. Resize to 800px, smart sharpen and save for web.

Beautiful! For my taste, I might have not darkened the sky quite so much. It is very dramatic, but it seems if the sky was that dark, the rest of the photo wouldn't be as light as it is. Regardless, it's an amazing scene.

Lovely light, well seen and captured. My only nitpick is that the white of the water seems a bit blown-out

Extremely dramatic vista - the water snaking around the curves, the smooth power of the waterfall, the intensity of the greens and aquas - well done

Lovely shot, I gave it a 7 in the free study. My only very minor complaint would be the triangle of concrete in the bottom left that sort of clashes with the unspoilt nature look of the rest of the photo.

Beautiful scenic view, excellent vantage point with amazing DOF. I like the way the dark sky brings your eye back down to the waterfall. The detail and vivid color is right on. Very nicely done.

Wow...what a beautiful place...did you use gradient filter, can you explain the "Darkened sky with a masked overlay layer"...really curious how to do this in "parts" of photos...wonderful shot...and how did you get the coordinates?
