In the original images these birds are blazingly bright coral, which was perfectly hideous, the lighting was horribly uneven, the water was filthy and the greenery was obtrusive. So I thought I'd soften everything up a bit.
The processing was Color Efex Pro monday morning filter, darkened up quite a bit from the default settings (adds blur, increase contrast, desaturates quite a bit leaving a pink tone), and Silver Efex Pro orange filter B&W conversion (so the birds were white). I put the monday morning version over the b&w then reduced opacity to taste. This evened out the lighting somewhat and took most of the color out of the background. Then I had to mix in some fake reflection via Flaming Pear flood on the left image, because the water was filthy and too mottled from the horrible midday light. Then I made a duplicate version and applied USM pretty strongly, because the monday morning filter blurs things up which was great for the background but I wanted detail back in the feathers. I then masked out the whole USM version (add layer mask and use the paintcan to dump in black), then used the eraser on the layer mask to paint over the birds thus revealing the sharpened bits. After resizing I did a bit more sharpening on some of the feathers and adjusted levels. A lot of work, but I like the resulting colors, although the images kinda suck since they are so cluttered. Ah well, at least I got some new processing ideas out of the venture!
And for proof of the incredibly ugly original, take a gander...
