Challenge: Hidden Gem -- 1,000th Challenge! (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR
Location: Melbourne
Date: Feb 26, 2009
Galleries: Abstract, Still Life
Date Uploaded: Mar 9, 2009

This was an entry I didn't put in the Feb 09 free study because I thought it might be disqualified, I sent it off to site council and it looks OK so I'll put it in here. The title was inspired when my son whipped out the Terry Pratchett book of the same title tonight.

i usually hate these setup shots, but this is really cool. be forewarned, though, i'll delete this comment if you don't put some notes in as to how you did it ;-)

Not voting, just commenting... and the fact that you already know what I think of this image, there's not really too much point to this comment other than to get me one vote closer to the 100 comments mark (God know's I'm not going to go for the 100% comment target, that's just crazy... impossible for that matter if they're all as long and rambling as this comment).

In all seriousness though. An excellent image, and should have been your free study shot last month, but lucky for you, this Gem challenge comes along and you get to use an image you didn't have the cohones to use in the Feb Free Study for fear of getting another DQ. I'm rambling again, aren't I... I'm not even going to get close to 100 comments at this rate... but you know what, I'm enjoying the free style writing exercise this comment has become... I might even try a few K10DGuy type comments while attempting the 100 comment goal... just to make it interesting, though, my writing abilities are nowhere near those of K10DGuy.

Back to your photo. In the words of Conner and rodfulk before they got blasted for trying to get a 100% comments ribbon with their minimalist, cut-and-paste comments... "Great shot"

Seriously though... I love the colour variation and the randomness of the light in this shot. I'm not sure about the light in the base of the glass... that might cost you some points with the voters, as too might the rim of the glass... but too hell with those voters that can't recognise a brilliant image when they see it. Excellent image.

I've always wanted to attempt something like this, it's a really cool example of what you can do when you paint with light.

Everyone always got excited when they were invited to Gandalf's for a party. Not only did he have the best fireworks show in the entire of Middle Earth, but when it came to mixing drinks, there simply was no better!

So they would gather with their glasses, and with a rainbow of delicious spirits and liquers, he would weave his magic and send them spiraling in to each glass in flashes of light and color, and they would cheer.

Ah, to be invited to a party at Gandalf's! It would be the highlight of the year!

Nice colours and technique. The border doesn't suit the pic and I think a tighter crop and neatening of the red 'spill' at the bottom surrounding the glass would have made a much cleaner picture.

Of course I've seen this technique before (very recently), but I love the light and color in your photo. A minor criticism: I've looked at this several times and it seems that the glass tips slightly to the right.

I'm hoping to leave comments on as many photo's in this challenge as possible... out of (currently) 1124 images, I gave 31 of them a 9. Your image was one of those 31.

One of the stand out "studio" shots in this challenge. The colour transitions in the streaks of light is clever and impactive. A simple idea but wonderfully executed.

Good luck for a strong finish in this challenge.

I want a shot of that! I love the cleanness of the light beams, the complexity of their shapes, and how the glass is barely, but still, visible. Really nice work. The way they leave out the top is almost like visual aromatherapy!
