Challenge: Hidden Gem -- 1,000th Challenge! (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-D30
Lens: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM
Location: Vinales valley, Cuba
Date: Jan 4, 2009
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/750 s
Galleries: Candid, Rural
Date Uploaded: Mar 10, 2009

Impresionism in Cuba, hope it's not too off general taste. I like the composition and colors, just wish I'd point the camera just a little lower... I like the blurred background, feels like a painting.
Editing: cloned unhealthy-looking spots on the foreground leaves and selectively brightened them (dodge and curves), resize, usm 400%/0,2px, border.

Looking at this again, I'm really sorry I didn't give it a higher score. :( I think it needs a little more contrast to make things pop, but subject-wise, this is just brilliantly creative. Fantastic photo!

I'm really starting to think that if I love a photo I'm cursing it from scoring well on this site. I'm sorry I love your photo!

Exceedingly underrated - excellent choice of DOF and impressionistic OOF elements.

Nice use of blur. Good detail in the foreground.

I like this, the use of blur here is something I don't think I would normall care for, but I think this give the tobacco leaves more personality.

Much stronger on second pass than first, for me. A lovely effect, great control of DOF, real old-timey feel to the light & color. 8 from me.

Interesting choice of focal point... you can make out enough detail to see the farmer... though I wouldnt mind seeing it with the farmer in focus, just to compare.

Oh I love this! I haven't seen such beautiful bokeh for quite a while, and I LOVE that the subject is enveloped in it. Your choice of border is wonderfully complimentary to the image. The greens, the browns, SO beautiful!

What an interesting image. I really like how you've chosen the subject to get into focus. The background is perfect DOF. Well done.

different focus...very interesting...had to study the shot some...it is appealing in colors and tones as well

This would be a great study in shallow dof if there was a bit more of the tobacco in the foreground. I liked the extreme blur of the background.

interesting selective focusing, I like it, 6
came back to comment on this a little more.
Would have liked it even better if you had:
- included a little more at the bottom
- selectively sharpened and increased contrast slightly of the immediate foreground

I like this unique picture. I think I would have liked to have seen a little more of the front row that is in focus. But I still like it.

Interesting choice for your DOF & focus point. It's such an interesting shot though, I'm not sure you needed to go for artistic...

Really love the arc of the water, the balance of the shot horizontally, the colors. The focus on the foreground reduces the quality of this shot for me.

Execution of this image is without fault, but the subject isn't holding me.

03/12/2009 11:37:33 PM
I like this and overall it works for me, but not so much the focus. It's not that the main subject is out of focus, but that the foreground leaves are. If the whole thing were blurry it would have a nice painterly effect.
