 My friend Matt, behind the counter at Ocean Coffee Roasters where I feed my daily coffee habit. Mattie is an occasional employee of Ocean and a very talented and versatile working musician. Check out his homepage at //www.as220.org/~matte/.
I took this photo in the middle of the day and the forgot to compensate for the extreme variation in light so the original is rather underexposed. I used equalize to fix it which accounts for the grainy, somewhat blown-out look which I think works in this case. The camera was set to black & white and I adjusted the hue/saturation to achieve the warmer grey tones. Otherwise no other cropping or adjustments were made.

I was surprised to see this place in the 51% percentile. Not because I don't like it --- I do. I thought I was getting slammed in the voting. I'm starting to catch on that there is a curve system at work. I happen to like the light coming in over his head. I know it's considered a 'flaw' but I think in this case it adds to the atmosphere of the scene. If I had my druthers there would be more detail in the machinery and no cord hanging down over his head...but if you read my shot details you'll know I was lucky to get what I did.

Thanks to the folks who commented! I feel pretty good with my ranking all things considered. :D

I think the light coming in from the window distracts a bit. unfortunate that the guys head couldn't have blocked it a little better. otherwise i think it's pretty good.
