 sorry about the blown-out rim of the hat, but nothing could be done about it in basic.

this was taken during the EarthFair in Balboa Park,San Diego, reportedly the biggest event of its kind (70,000 people!). I had about an hour to scout the place, I'm glad I came across this guy. Quite a character!

thanks Robert!...should I take it as a compliment, or a tongue-in-the-cheek? :) Frankly, I'd much prefer my work to be just worthy rather than "ribbon" worthy :)

I'm so proud of the voters. There was a time, when they wouldn't have cared that the photo itself was so powerful that it totally compensates for an understandable technical imperfection -- especially on a candid! I'm so encouraged to see the wisdom in overlooking what you apologized for in the hat rim and awarding this a very deserving first place! Congratulations!

An excellant character portrait sligtly affected by over done white on the hat brim. However, it created an interesting feature with the light highlights on the shade portion of the face. A terrific artistic success and a qualified technical success, this image should place high in the competition as a candid portrayal of what appears to be a colorful character. A terrific conversion to black and white compliments the composition. Well done.

really love the single eye looking out, the close crop to focus us on the face, and the slope of the brim to frame the intensity of the gaze, and your conversion to b/w is stellar
