The train station in Gerstungen used to be one of the most important transfer points for trains going from West Germany to the GDR and back, and also from West Germany non-stop to West-Berlin. It was well protected by East-german border patrol to avoid people attempting to escape to "the other side of the big fence".
Just a few kilometers north lay the Border Observation Point "Alpha", one of the most important observation wards of US army troops inside Europe.
Platform #2 of the train station leading West never actually utilized for people to get on a train, as there were basically no people allowed to emigrate to the West part of Germany...
