This is my best example of what not to do with HDR/tonemapping.

I had just a bit of time at lunch so went out into the park and plopped down the tripod and started shooting away. I bracketed four times (with overlap) for an extra 7 stops. Normally, I tend to shoot this way and then have plenty to choose from to create my final photo.

Just a comment here on bracketing. Some believe in bracketing just enough to have something not underexposed and not overposed. Others believe to bracket as wide as possible and combine as many as practical. The reasoning behind this is to average the noise.

I typically fall into the category of using more bracketed shots, which works great to get rid of ghost objects such as moving people, but slower moving objects such as clouds can get muddied - see clouds just above left of tree.

I used the fisheye on this and it tends to have chromatic aberration around the edges so I have to remove before HDR before the tonemapping makes it stand out more. I did not convert from raw for these so it can be seen, although not so much at this size.

My pc is fairly new and wanted to see if it could handle 12 raw images, and it actually went fairly fast. I decided to use the combined images and tonemap the heck out of 'em to see what would happen. I also ran some Nik Efex tonal contrast and did some color/curves/levels adjustments.

This is not my normal style of HDR since I try to go for a more natural look. But at least I know my pc is fine, even if my photographic judgment tonight is not.

12 RAW files! Nothing like brand new RAM in the PC. I usually go as far as 5 RAW files. I don't think this is too far, HDR looks great on Wooden subjects with multiple exposures separated by a stop or two.

The only thing I see wrong with this is there's too much light and not enough dark to balance out the contrast. The detail is excellent but I think your exposure absorbed too much light as indicated by the circular flares in the underside of the overhang. Good attempt though!!

I noticed that also and tends to happen quite a bit when I tonemap. I don't see as much of this when I use Artizen to tonemap, but overall I prefer Photomatix.
