The Banksia oblongifolia seed pods which are pictured appear to have been reduced to about one-third of their original size and shaped for use as dispensers of essential oils in aromatherapy.

Banksia is a genus of about 75 species all of which occur in Australia. They grow in a small area both from the perspective of Australia and the world's forests.

On average, their seed pots are very large being 250 mm (about 10 inches) in length. Seed pods are woody, reddish in color, with an attractive grain.

Occasionally the seed pods of Banksia oblongifolia are used to produce decorative items. An undesirable characteristic of the wood is it warps badly upon drying.

Paleontological evidence suggests that banksia-like plants have existed for over 40 million years.
