This woman is an unusual case study. She is an ex heroin and cocaine addict, she said she used to inject cocaine every 20 minutes. She has somehow managed to pull her life together and is now married with 2 kids, at 50. She put herself through a psychology degree and now works for the department of housing, dealing with people with exactly the same problems as she used to have. The down side is that she knows she's fragile, she's very underweight, has obsessive compulsive disorder, obvious physical and mental scars from the drugs, and tells me she's very tempted at times to go back to the dark side. She has suffered from depression and several suicide attempts. She asked me to shoot an image to go with a poem that she has written and published in a book. It goes like this:
"Distorted Disorder"
Frustration driving her to the end
Like desert sand, slipping through her fingers
No stopping those thoughts
Crying hard, trying hard
Fixations, compulsions, guilt
And like a spider prying, it followed her
The faster she ran, the more entangled she became
In its maze of twisted diagnosis.
She fits no profile, they say
They've taken her soul
Closed in, between two walls
No new treatments, only defeatism
Can't tell anymore where she belongs
Something's gone terribly wrong.
Then from afar a whisper is heard
Lay your weary body down, let the battle end
Rumbling of stone walls
She's finally released
But her dreams have been shattered
She closes her eyes, no more sounds to be heard. |
