what a moment! this guy came up to me 15 minutes earlier, asked if i was a photographer, and told me he was going to surprise his girlfriend at sunset!

post-processing was simple: cropped, sharpened, added a layer to use brad's tutorial on halo removing, flattened, adjusted levels and curves.

now we'll see if dpc likes it as much it's liked in the real world ;-)

---------

well, obviously, not as much ;-)

maybe it's the crop, maybe it's the post-processing, who knows. just another example of the disconnect between ribboning and reality.

here's an outtake

Ironic... if you had staged this to make it look less authentic it probably would have ribboned. Real life and DPC sunsets are antonyms, a combination that makes great symbolic photos but lousy DPC scores.

I'm with vawendy--the backpack emphasizes the authentic nature of the story. If this was a set up shot, the backpack would have been moved out of the picture. As it is, it's part of the story. good one!

Sometimes photograpy isn't about technical perfection. Sometimes it isn't about posing. Sometimes it isn't about any of the things that we here at DPC, demand of an image.

Photography, literally translated, is "Writing with light." In this case, the light has written a love story. Fortunately, you were there to capture the moment for posterity.

Was the lighting perfec? No.
Was the pose perfect? No.
Was the composition perfect? No.
Was the post processing perfect? No.

Was the story perfect? Yes!

Thank you for sharing this incredible moment.

the silhouette doesn't work for me as well as it could: his left leg, the way it is positioned makes him look like a midget sitting on a one leg stool...and the bag. She looks like she is really slouching. I love the sky and the clarity, but the actual pose doesn't work for me...
