Challenge: Promote Your Zoo (Advanced Editing VII*) Camera: Canon EOS-450D Rebel XSi Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Location: Sacramento Zoo (Sacramento, CA) Date: Jun 5, 2009 Aperture: f/5.6 ISO: 1600 Shutter: 1/400 Galleries: Animals Date Uploaded: Jun 6, 2009

I'm in Sacramento for a few days, visiting my mom. Knowing about this challenge, I suggested that we explore the zoo for the first time in ages. This was just about the only animal that wasn't a) asleep, b) directly next to a fence, c) standing in brown water, or d) behind greasy, grubby glass.
I used three of my new toys- my new Canon XSi, Canon 70-200 f/4L, and Canon EF 1.4x Extender. I lucked out, as some clouds passed over and muted the appearance of a chain link fence that I was shooting through for about 5 minutes. I have a feeling that the high ISO is going to hurt, and I'm not so sure how the cutesy caption attempt will play out, but here goes nothing! |

I cannot believe this did not end up higher. I had it pegged to beat mine. |

Greetings from the Critique Club!
I'd say you did better than "here goes nothing!" I, for one, thought the phrasing was very good for this challenge - has an element of humor and matches your photograph - I could see this as an actual ad for the zoo. I'm also delighted that you took your mom to the zoo - challenges have a way of making us do things we probably wouldn't otherwise, don't they? And finally, congrats on the new toys! You did well with that lens, particularly with an extender - requires very fast shutter and a steady hand! You had good crispness in the focus and it was smart of you to wait for the cloud, as the exposure looks good. AND you got a great look from your subject.
The high ISO isn't all that readily apparent, but does show up a bit in the background. One option would be to selectively apply noise reduction on the background and see if that improves it a bit. Since it's advanced editing, you can create a duplicate layer, apply noise reduction, then erase it off any parts you don't like the effect on.
And congrats on a new 5th place entry on your profile page top row! |
