I believe this photo should have scored a lot higher then it did. Obviously if you pan against a featureless sky you will not get the motion blur associated with panning. Unfortunately many voters voted you down for it.
That said I think that even if there was a background the panning effect would probably have been negated or very minimal with a shutter speed of 1/1000

I would like to suggest a personal challenge to all of you who say that this photo could be taken without panning.
Attach a 300mm lens, point it up in the sky anywhere, then wait for a Purple Martin to fly through your FOV and press the shutter button. I would LOVE to see your results!!!! |

Sorry, but with a shutter speed of 1/1000 I think it's perfectly plausible for this to have been captured without panning. |

Although this is a very nice photo of a Purple Martin, there is little motion blur to suggest speed. |

I'm sorry, I can't vote on this one, because, without the background, there's no way that I can tell if this was done with panning or just a fast shutter speed. |

Great photo of the bird, but not much panning action is visible due to the background. |

The bird is sharp and they are indeed fast. Freeze motion is sometimes acheived with fast shutter speed, flash, or motion panning (or combinations). With the background showing no detail, and the wings not showing much motion blur either, the image does not convey the idea of motion panning to a viewer who was not there with you. |

It's a really nice shot, but it looks like you've used a fast shutter speed rather than the use of panning. |

Good example of the technique of motion panning. Too bad the weather wasn't co-operative with an interesting looking sky :( |

"9 comments already- everyone commenting on my lack of BG. If I hear that one more time, I'm going to scream.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!"
Might as well make it an even 10. :-)
Nothing like giving away which entry in the challenge is yours. ??? |

Looks more like frozen motion rather than panning motion |

You really need to have a background to demonstrate that you actually panned - I have no idea if you did or not. |

Beautiful capture, but not showing the panning (which I assume is part of the challenge: the contrast between subject & environment?) But fantastic picture of the bird itself! |

We need to see more of your background to see the effect of the pan. |

It's a nice clear photo, but without the background, you don't really get the sense that this was panned, even if it actually was |

Great shot, but without the classic blur to the background it's hard to tell if the shot was panned or not. |
