As some of the comments seem to indicate, the low scores likely came from voters who found the photo unsettling. It's ironic that what amounts to the very gist and pith of an emotionally charged image often also inspires fears. When this happens, an attempt to diminish it by scoring it low, should probably be interpreted as a desire to diminish the fear it conjured in those afflicted. |

This photo needs no title, at least in the way I like to look at it. At first glance it might be posed: the grasping fist is iconic, and the boy's lips are full and dark as a lipsticked girl's and I am led to think a bit of lipstick got smudged on the cheek. But the expression goes beyond everything: something is happening way beyond the boy's experience/expectation even as he tries to keep his sidelocks out of his face. Where will he go from here, what will he think? |

Even more fascinating, now that I have read your notes explaining the scene. Still a strong image and wayyyyy underrated in this challenge.
After reading the other comments, this shot is a prefect example of a great shot that does not have broad DPC-friendly appeal. However, the comments show you totally nailed your intended audience for this image. A successful entry in my book.

This image is sad and disturbing, yet powerful. I truly hope this young man is okay. I really don't know what else to say.
I'm back because I can't stop thinking about this image. I originally gave you a 7 but I'm bumping it up to a 9. You captured so much emotion and feeling with this. I'm very curious about the story behind this photo. |

Wow, what you have here appears to be a very controversial, high impact, candid shot... If this is a candid shot, this is an amazing one. Either way, this photo tugs at emotion regardless of race or religion. Very high impact, and very well executed... Amazing shot! |

I find the ambiguity of this picture uncomfortable - this may be gritty social realism or it may be carefully staged - it may be full of social awareness or it may be unpleasantly anti semitic - scored quite low by me bevcause I am unsure exactly what i am seeing |

im sure there is a story for this image, which would be very interesting to hear. but the title in context to the image is too brazen for some. |

Wow, gutsy title. Nice street scene capture of the moment. |

Speaks volumes. I'm not even sure where to begin with a comment.
I'm not sure if this was staged, or you actually caught this boy being picked on for real, but it speaks more to me than most other images I have seen on DPC. I was raised Jewish and never got picked on for it, but I grew up in a largely Jewish area of Long Island. I was the kid that got picked on for everything else, however, and I have never forgotten the experience.
Since there is no vote of 20, I will have to give this a 10 and a fave. |

I have passed this by a number of times because the image troubles me. I cannot hold myself to artistic integrity without scoring this evocative image highly.....9 |

Great photojournalism AND artistic. Conveys alot of emotion and would like to know more about the story here. Grain gives it a newspaper feel. |
