You'd never believe me if I told you...
Our backyard has a sandy patch that will not grow grass. We put my 10 year-old son's home plate down, used baby powder as chalk for the box, and...ahem...hot glued the ball to the bat. My hubby held it up while I climbed up on a chair to take the picture. Post processing was: rotate, crop, auto levels, auto contrast, USM, levels again, USM again. Voila!

Ha! I thought that ball looked glued on! :-) Still, I can't imagine why this photo didn't place higher. I had picked it for a ribbon, but that's not the firt time I've been wrong. Really great idea - hope to see lots more just like it in future contests.

Hey, 5.6 isn't bad! The composition and angle are great. I think it would have placed higher with some motion :) You might want to try it as an experiment.

Good luck...

Haha, I didn't realize the ball was glued! Had me fooled. I commented during the challenge that the bat and ball were laid over a pain of glass. Probably would have been easier that way? Again, nice shot!

It was clever though.

Hey, thanks everyone for your comments during the challenge. I had high hopes for this one, but I guess hot glue wasn't such a good idea after all! :o) LOL

Would have liked the bat to be blurred from swing motion.

Very creative point of view. The detail, composition, and DOF are excellent and the idea overall is simply brilliant. I'm assuming the bat and ball were laid over a pain of glass? One thing that would be neat (outside of the challange) would be to crop the ball in Pshop and create 2-3 layers overlapping and each other. Set the layers' opacity and this would give the ball the illusion of motion blur. Anyways, just a thought :) .... Hope you do well and I give this photo a 9

I just love this image. Great effect to remove the batter from the gameplay, and I love the perspective.

Very good... would have been neat to get some some action blur on the ball or the bat... i can only make an assumption on how you got the shot

Did you use glue or gum on that ball?

Was the ball or bat in motion on this shot? If so, this is an amazing photo. I am very impressed. Incredible focus... the "blurry" background actually makes the shot even more impactful, too!

Ball glued to bat?? I like your idea here - I think a plainer bat (wood) would have worked better - less distraction from your excellent composition

I think a good wooden bat (sorry I'm a purist) would have been a better choice here. The green color is very distracting as is the graphic lettering. Great idea and nicely shot.

Cool shot and I like the metallic green. I know it has been validated as authentic, but it still appears a bit disjointed or "pasted in" (which I realize it isn't -- it just makes it look somewhat flat to my eyes).

I realize this is supposed to look like the bat is hitting the ball, but it looks like it's glued onto the bat and that's a bit distracting. I like the angle of the shot though and I'm glad you chose a bat with rich colours - although the light reflecting into the bat is a bit harsh. Good composition overall though 6

I know it is personal but I would have liked this shot better with a wooden bat, the brightly colored aluminum bat dominates the image without contributing much. Great idea, well executed, top ten

Really great photo. Amazing that you were able to freeze the action with so much color and clarity. Looks like you glued the ball to the bat. ;-) Great job!

Either way 9

Cool deal for a photo. Did you glue the ball to the bat or something? I would like to see a stop motion of this shot, with a little motion blur and stuff... good job.
