Sunday a week ago, my daughter in law, grandson, and I were on the way back from an attempt to see the space shuttle launch. We came upon a roll over that had just happened, and a woman and baby were still in the vehicle. The baby was safe, in a child seat in the back, but was hanging upside down with her head about 6 inches above the water when I cut the belt to get her out. The driver, a 53 yr old woman was not so lucky. She was trapped head down, driver's position, not concious, and upside down with the truck. I had to feel in the dark water to even find her. The vehicle was a 4 door pickup, so I let the seat back fold back into the back, and dragged her out through the passenger side rear door.
We did CPR and got her breathing before EMS arrived. The story had a sad ending though, because she had inhaled so much muck and water. She did wake up at the hospital for a few hours though, and had a chance to say good by to her family.
Her husband, who was with her in the truck got a broken arm, so he could not get her out of the water.
If she had been wearing her seat belt, I think that she would have probably survived by being awake when the truck stopped moving.
It was raining, and the cause of the accident was water on the road. The water in the ditch was only about 2 ft deep.
Wear those belts, and slow down a little when the weather is bad, ok?
