I see exactly how this works, although I have never seen a helm set up like this. I can just imagine how it must have been to try to steer this rig in a rolling sea with the deck slippery with whale oil. It's also a lot easier to steer a boat when the wheel is in front of you instead of the other way in the boat. Those guys were tough in the days when this ship sailed.
I notice that they lashed the wheel to keep people from trying to play with it. |

I've never seen this mechanism either but now it seems like an obvious solution eh. Nice shot, love the sepia it fits in with the era |
