The first think that hit my eye was that the boat looks to be heading "out" of the picture. It is located in the 3rd - 3rd of the pic looking from left to right. It just looks arkward. |

I agree with those that said the lack of a clear subject hurt your chances.
Additionally I find the reflective quality of the water to not be pleasing to the eye. I'd be interested to see how a polarizing filter could have changed things. |

The most interesting parts of the photo (one of which you even highlight in your comments - the bridge) are diminished by the overwhelming presence of water and sky. This makes it very hard to find a point of interest to focus on, and the eyes just wander around in vain until the mind just stops caring. My suggestion would be to frame it (or crop it) so that the boat and bridge are much more prominent in the frame. 720 pixels don't go a long way, gotta make the most of them. |

inre your request in the forums:
This image doesn't 'say' anything, nor is it particularly aesthetically pleasing. Absent one of those characteristics, it is difficult for a photo to do well. There is just not much of interest in the image, nor is it well composed, though the technicals and processing are good.
I think the photo could be improved by a more dynamic composition, possibly by zooming in closer on a 'subject'. Good luck in the future! Also, FS, as mentioned, are positively brutal! I loved my image in this month but it did not excel :( |

I would also agree Free Studies are hard. There are so many dynamic photos. This one would have scored better with a tighter crop and more emphasis on the boat. To me the shoreline is distant and busy. This just does not really grab my attention since it appears so "cluttered". Please remember it is only my opinion. |

I think a tighter crop would have worked well here. There is allot of water and sky which draw the eye away from the subject, and it also makes the subject appear smaller and more difficult to establish. Just my two cents... |

This is one of those images where I am left wondering where to photographer wants me to look, it to me just lacks a clear focal point and comes off as more of a snap shot taken while on vacation. As others have said the center horizon does not help and I think time of day leaves the image lighting looking flat. I did not vote but would have likely scored this a 5, not a bad shot but nothing in the wow factor. Hope the info helps |

There is a subtle V that could be a leading line however feel it's not strong enough to carry the image. Possibly cropping to square so the bridge is in the bottom left would help with the dynamics of the image.

You can say that again!!! Personally, I agree with you that this should have scored higher in the mid 5 range. |

Free studies are hard! I gave this a 6, would have expected it to score much higher than it did. I agree it does not have the 'wow' factor, which is needed for a high FS finish. Dont be disheartened by the low vote, DPC members are very hard to please !

I think one of the biggest problems is having the horizon at the mid-line. While I'm usually not much of a rule of thirds person, horizons at the mid-line can be very weak. Either cutting cropping out part of the sky, or cropping part of the water, to place the horizon at one of the thirds would help it a lot. (this is if you can't zoom in closer. The amount of sky and water really don't bring much to the picture. It's the boat and the bridge that are so interesting, and they're still quite far away.)
Also, I agree that it's over processed.
However, I don't believe it deserves a 4.88. Free study scoring is really harsh. People expect the best of the best in free study challenges, and thus an average photo gets pounded. |

For me the action feels too far away, its definitely over sharpened & has a slight cartoonish feel to it which I don't think goes over too well. Better isolation of the boat could improve it, perhaps even a tight crop around the boat & bridge could have been better. |

I think perhaps the image just lacked the WOW that people expect in a FS image. I liked the composition, and the focus looks good - perhaps a tad over sharp. While I am not a big user of HDR processing, I think with this shot it would have helped boost the score. |

I like the composition on this. It breaks a few 'rules' sure, but it gives the shot an interesting narrative feel to it. |
