The drip tank from this setup is built using a tennis ball container and various plumbing parts. There is a valve in there which allows me to vary the speed of the drips. I just adjusted it until I found a speed that worked for drop collisions.


To get a shot of the collision, you only want to photograph the first two drops (one creating the upsplash and the other hitting it). I held a cup to catch the constant drips, pulled it away and fired the camera. It took many many tries, but I got my timing down and captured quite a few good shots.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm done with water drops now (I'll have to stick with what I've got), but I'm going to have to go back and try this someday. The collision shots would be worth it. (I also need to get a remotely fired flash so I have an extra hand. Right now I'm shooting with one hand, and manually firing the flash with the other :D
