Shallow DOF is fine by me, and those eyes are very bright!
Since you say he wasn't moving around, you could have tried taking multiple images with different focal planes, and then combining them in post processing to artificially increase the DOF. I've never done it, but it is one if the uses of multiple images specifically allowed under the Advanced Rules.
Still, I think those bright eyes helped get you the extra 3/4 point you scored over my bumblebee. ;-) |

| Not bad, but needs more DOF in my opinion (at least a part of the wings should be focused) |
