Challenge: HDR II (Advanced Editing VII ) Collection: Flora Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS Location: Clee Hill, Shropshire Date: Sep 12, 2009 Aperture: f/4 ISO: 100 Shutter: 1/1000 Galleries: Floral , High Dynamic Range (HDR) Date Uploaded: Sep 12, 2009
I took three bracketed exposures but in the end produced 4 copies from a single RAW (at +/- 1 and 2ev) and combined the 5 exposures. [Sep. 17th, 2009 01:20:08 PM] I was quite interested to see how some people felt that this wasn't really HDR and that it was a little under-processed. The full editing steps were:
Four copies made of original RAW; at -1ev, -2ev, +1ev, +2ev
Saved as tiffs at 1/2 size
Exported to CS4 - automate - merge to HDR
Used local Adaptation tone mapping
Imported back into Aperture
Applied Tonal Contrast filter from Color Efex Pro
With Viveza:
Increased saturation and darkened blue sky
Increased contrast and brightness of flower, decreased saturation.
In Aperture:
Decreased saturation of yellow, increased definition
Cloned away the worst of the haloing
Exported at 720px Max
In Preview:
Increased saturation, exposure, contrast and sharpness
Saved at <200K
Uploaded to DPC

This was a strange challenge. I am still finding some of my own highest rated shots well into the mid 5's. Got a 9 and a fave from me.

Cool nature shot. For this one, in the sunlight, I can see the shadow detail was enhanced. 7

A totally engaging combination of shallow DOF, HDR techniques, and the way you caught the light on the subject. I'm not normally a floral fan, and this is a common subject, but exceptionally well done. I think I am faving it.

The HDR isn't really noticable in this. But I amke a commitment to try and give posetive feedback even when the photo doesnt exactly meet the challenge description... I like the textures a lot, but the photo just isnt very interesting. The background needs to be filled with something, maybe a lake, of a river setting. And I'd use a photo editing program to add some dynamics to the lighting, that's a bit flat as well.

I rather like this, different to the rest of the crop. Hope it doesn't get scored down for being different.

5 - A reasonable use of HDR, but not a very engaging photo, in my opinion
7 - A reasonable use of HDR, and an engaging photo, in my opinion
