 Backyard shot.
I figured out (as a rookie in birding) birds stay more quiet (though still suspicious) when I use the right-angle viewfinder extension. Direct aiming alarms them.

That's a classy lens to be birding with. That little viewfinder trick sounds like a very good idea. I would guess that the hawk might have been hearing your lens focusing, although it is ultrasonic to us.
