Challenge: Free Study 2009-12 (Advanced Editing VII) Collection: 2010 Camera: Canon EOS-50D Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Location: Aledo, Texas Date: Dec 17, 2009 Aperture: F5.6 ISO: 400 Shutter: 1/250 Galleries: Animals, Rural Date Uploaded: Dec 30, 2009

I was running around this field, shooting for the rural decay challenge and this cow was getting closer and closer, apparently curious about me. I noticed the way the shadow of the gate was lying across it, and had this shot available for just a few moments. It was quickly followed by this shot:
The cow was trying to lick my lens at one point, unfortunately, I was not quick enough on the shutter button to catch that.
The more I look at this shot, the more it grows on me. Not expecting it to be a high scoring entry, however. It's slightly on the quirky side, and I'm entering this hoping to nail strong appeal for a narrow crowd. Receiving comments from certain members will be the measure of success for this entry.
Anticipated critiques:
-Cows rear is slightly cut off at frame edge
Post-challenge notes:
Scored in the anticipated range, and it did get some comments from some folks that appreciated it. This photo hit it's target audience, so despite a mediocre average, I count it as a success. |

I was just about to make the grill marks comment. Maybe that should have been your title. Shots like this make me miss Texas. Remind me to tell you the transmitter story some time... |

funny, it took me two views to love this image. the first time around I thought I was giving you a 7 just because there was a cow in it. But eventually I bumped you to 10 and put you in my Gallery. |

Yes.
eta: Like cow, like barred shadow that looks like some donkeys' markings, placement of cow's eye. the lurching toward photographer moment. I think that's a big yes, but I don't like to overuse bold type or exclamation points.

I really thought this would score higher, but not a bad showing in the FS. I really liked the how the shadows fell on the cow with the vertical in line with her ear and the lower one around the point where her legs met her body. The contrast in the B&W was great and I liked the angle of the shot. I gave you a 7, and again really thought it would score higher. It has it's fans though. |

Nice job making use of something that would normally prove to be a hindrance. The grid line also reminds me of grill marks, so there is a bit of a double entendre there. |

It is a nice image, the contrast is nice between the animal, sky and shadow. However there seems to be a certain depth missing here. Sure its a nice image, but just missing that wow factor. |
