My sister-in-law and her boyfriend and I went out to Banff National Park over the weekend. It was a great day to go out shooting. The weather cooperated and it was really cool seeing the park covered in snow and ice. I seem to only make it out in the warmer months.

Weird and confounded editing steps. I probably could have simplified this a lot but this is what I did:

Did a a single image tone map in Photomatix
Exported image from Lightroom without any adjustments as a TIFF

Did a HDR image from the two resulting images in Photomatix.

Adjusted HSL in PSP XI
Resized
USM

I enjoy the way the color of the stone contrasts with the rest of the scene. Having said that, I'm left wishing the falls comprised a larger portion of the scene. The golden light filtering through the trees is also a bit too bright and has blown. I think lowering your perspective would have helped to emphasize the falls as a subject matter.

HDR? I like the shot, but the contrast is a little low.

What a magnificent frozen waterfall with the small touches of golden sweetlight repeating on the treetops and touching the rocks. The snow sets off the warm & veined brown tones of the rocks in a beautiful complement and the angle of the larger one is a perfect frame for the scene as well. The lower jagged edges of the main rock echoes the uneven diagonal of the treeline and draws the eye up to the darker towering pines. A hint of blue sky makes promises that while this Winter might be cold, it is not necessarily long and there will be small savored moments of pure Magick along the way.

I have a feeling there can be some really fantastic images taken at this location. To bad this is not one of them. For me it seems very simple and very safe. Straight on is not always the best way to take a image. Specially of something with so much character and personality as frozen falls along cave walls.
