 More fun with improvised optics. This is my son playing drums. The camera is a Helix cigar box about four inches deep. The "lens" is a credit-card sized pocket Fresnel magnifier (like this). The diaphrahm (black construction paper) has a circular aperture about half an inch in diameter (~f/8). I exposed this for thirty seconds onto Ilford RC multigrade paper. Developed in Ilford chemicals.

The camera was suspended from my basement ceiling. The only lighting was a fluorescent overhead lamp (right beside the camera).

He played a swing rhythm for me and ended with a flourish.

Yet another lensbaby effect! I think I'll stop off at the local gas staion mini-mart and pick up a new lens!

So cool. What an interesting camera. How did you learn to make it? Is it a pinhole?
The photo is so intriguing and yet so familiar. Great perspective from above and I love how blurry it is.

I thought this was a lensbaby shot with some editing at first. It's amazing to read what it actually is!

I like the shot, it has a strange abstract / dreamlike feel about it, very cool!

Considering the process that you describe, I would say very creative. Also the choice of subject and composition elements are wonderful. Only thing I don't see I would not figure out without reading your description, is figure of your son (blurred of course).

You captured to intensity of the drums, and the general intoxication of a strong rhythm. Great work. I like the x-ray like image of his right arm against the drum!
