 Some lamps in the lobby of the Dallas Sheraton hotel. To me, this seems reminiscent of a fleet of rockets launching, hence the title.

This is one of my favorite shots of the year, I love the interplay of the circles, lines and orange lights. There was not a challenge at the time that was appropriate for it, and I entered another shot from the same session in that month's freestudy. I am especially pleased that I managed this with a Powershot A530 that I bought for $30 in a pawn shop. This little 5Mp P&S can so some really nice shots once you know what it's limits and strengths are.

As good a photo as I think this is, in the annual super freestudy, you have to totally blow people away, so anything over a 5 1/2 will be doing well. Always hoping for a 6+, of course.

Anticipated critiques:
-Busy background
-Don't understand the relationship of the title to the image.

Post-challenge notes:
Held with the pack on this one, placing just a few spots shy of dead center. Not shabby at all for a pic taken with a $30 used point & shoot.

Great "best of" shot!! I really like this one! I thought the lines and particularly the colors were just great! What an interesting spot!

I really like this, Steve. Came back to it several times in voting/viewing. Like you, I quite enjoy the interplay of the shapes and colors. There's just something quite pleasing about it.

Fantastic shot Steve. I loved the colors and patterns, not to mention the excellent perspective. I gave it a 7 and feel that is a bit underrated. Considering it's a Best of Challenge it's definitely one to be proud of.

You've done well with that A530!

Wow, I love the colors and shapes of these light fixtures. This is an interesting study in colors, shapes and lines. I like how you present this in an interesting angle, but I don't think you got the angle presentation nearly enough to make these fixtures visually pop off of their space. Yes, I know angle can be tough and what I am about to suggest *may* have been impossible. However, the lines of the tall building in the backdrop -compete- and distract from the lines and shapes of those cool light fixtures. If possible - get a straight up shot at that larger fixture on the top portion of this photo so that there is nothing but sky behind it. To me, that larger fixture on the upper portion first struck me as something seen on planetary star charts or planetary orbit trajectories. I know your title is making the allusion that all these fixtures are blasting off into space, but my eyes cannot help but be drawn to that one on the top portion. The full circular shapes and spectacular yellow/orange hues really capture my eye; would make a great abstract in a squared presentation btw. Nonetheless a slightly above average shot that shows a lot of imagination and an eye for looking at new angles to show off the beauty in what many would pass by everyday without blinking an eye.

Nicely seen and nicely executed. My temptation would have been to do this in black and white, but the color really holds up here and even adds to the image.
