Challenge: Selective Desaturation (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Z
Location: Portugal
Date: Jun 15, 2004
Aperture: f/3.2
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/4

An experience that I made with my brother using slow sincro flash (that's why it isn't crispy clear) at night fall. I aplied dessaturation and gaussian blur to the background. It is my first selective dessaturation photo. At least I tried.

Greetings from the Critque Club!

Composition:
Your subject choice for this challenge isn't the greatest. One thing I've realized doing critques for this challenge, is that leaving something in color with black and white around it, makes whatever is in color the foreground. Whatever is black and white becomes the background. While your framing is great, and interesting, I think it'd be much better as a uniform picture, either black and white or color. But not both. Right now, the entire foreground is in color, and the background is desaturated. So there really isn't a lot of impact by making it selectively desaturated.

Lighting:
I like your use of flash for this. It works nicely. It's not too harsh like flash usually produces (for my photos anyway ;)

Technical:
I think technically your photo is sound. Your aperture choice for this photo is great. Like a macro portrait or something.

Post-processing:
You did alright here. The desaturation is fine, as is the gaussian blur. WHat I don't like is the edge between foreground and background. That might be from the slow flash, but I think it's from editing. Either you dodged / burned it, or else had part of the foreground selected when you blurred it.

Overall:
I like this photo, it's interesting and well put together, it just doesn't work for selective desaturation.

Nice attempt, I look forward to your future submissions.

Sorry. It looks a lot like a snapshot. Nothing wrong with snapshots, just not for a competition.

I am sure know how much I love this picture!

Nice use of gaussian blue to decrease the DOF. The remaining colors are dull, and the pose is unimaginative. Even though the model may be "photogenic," this snapshot type photo lacks any creativity or artistic value.

A brightly psychedellic colored tie-dye shirt may have been more effective, the colors here are just too warm.

this guy wouldn't have had a pierced nose in the 60's, or such a short haircut What were you thinking?

Given your title, I think this would have worked better had you taken out all the color except the shirt and the tip of the cigarette, even the skin and eyes. It might have made it a little more interesting and effective.

Good desat; unfortunately the subject is just a little flat and doesn't really match his surroundings.

Didn't they have long hair in the 60's?
