I'm a bit late adding these details because I've been away for a couple of weeks. At around the 70 vote mark it was scoring about 6.65 and then someone asked for it to be validated. After that it dropped to 6.3 before climbing slowly back to its finishing score. (I wonder if anyone has noticed the "This image has been validated" statement having a detrimental effect on the scoring. Maybe it was just coincidence.)
In the meantime, quite a few people commented on the lighting and/or the ray of light. The set-up was straight forward on the kitchen table using natural, overcast daylight from a window. The camera was on a tripod. I used manual exposure for a 2 second shutter speed with 1 stop of underexposure. The 'ray' of light is a roll of white paper being waggled about during the exposure.
On reflection, I feel the crop is a little too tight.
