The Manhattan Amateur Classic (//www.nyusadance.org/mac/mac.shtml) is one of the largest amateur ballroom dance competitions in the United States. It is held in New York, NY. My wife and I used to compete in the Pre-Champ Latin category, albeit not together, but through dance is how we met! The couple that I have submitted are Cezary Dyrda & Sandra Spiernacka from New York, and they are couple 196 competing Youth Championship Standard. They danced Waltz, Tango, V. Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep.

My wife and I have not competed in about 1 - 2 years, but we have now started learning photography. This is the first photo that I am submitting to DPChallenge, so all critique is very much welcomed!

Greetings from the Critique Club.

First impressions are that the lighting is a bit harsh - on board flash?

Technically this is an ok shot but diffusing the flash would have helped a bit. The landscape crop feels out of place here are the space to their left and right adds nothing to the story - maybe portrait would have been beter?

Artistically we catch a glimpse of their faces and that's what tells the story. If we could have seem her face more it would have helped engage us. The back background also doesn't allow us to get the context of the dancers as well as if there were some detail in it (although I suspect you weren't able to achieve that given the lighting in the venue).

In summary this is a good shot but there are areas to work on. Congrats on your first DPC entry!

Feel free to PM me if you have any queries.
Gerry

The harsh onboard flash is a problem, but I think under these circumstances, you didn't have anything else you could do. You captured this well for the conditions you were clearly shooting in.

composition is not great, needs less at the top and a little more on the bottom
