Shot with an SB600 through an umbrella at camera left, very close to the subject to make it as big as possible. I processed with photomatix to bring out shadow detail among other adjustments (a contrast boost, some recovery, and a touch of saturation). The stones were the hardest part of the framing process. Whenever I changed the angle at which I shot, they would flatten out, and in a way, this was an incredibly lucky shot, since they did not appear at a curve most of the time. I chose the DOF based on the power of my light. I pushed it as far as I could go without making the flash too obvious. Balancing with available light would have ruined the WB, so I chose to keep it artificial light only. I'm a little sad about the slightly blown highlights in the bottom left of the frame above the green rock. I suppose this means I probably could have pushed the aperture maybe a 3rd of a stop more, but I can't turn back the clock now... |
