****************

I was going for an old school arty B&W film look on this one (which apparently was not what the challenge was about). The texture of the ice (which is what is in the background -- it is even mentioned in the title) and the motion of the splash gives it a grainy feel, but there is actually no grain/noise in the photo. I thought that the slight blur of the wings gave it a feeling of joy as the birds are heading north and returning to their ponds as the ice melts.

Then again maybe it is just a photo of a bird playing in the water.

I liked this. It is almost all composition and texture, allowing the goose to serve up the frisson. I suspect it would print way better than it looks on the monitor especially at this size, and indeed this is one of the dangers of this venue - I find myself catering to the electronic display rather than thinking about ink and paper.

The spareness or understatement of your elements says fine art to me.

I think the point of this challenge was to push boundaries and aim for a more contemporary feel -- to avoid the usual calendar images.

That may not have been clear from the challenge name, though the description pointed to a discussion thread where some of this was hashed out.

3 - Both your title and the way you have processed this, including composition and tilt, isn't saying 'art' to me.

Well composed and processed. I like the grain.

Beautiful capture, timing and composition. Not sure if it is noise near the top, or shimmering water but it definitely adds to the 'fine art' feel.

Would I hang it on my wall. Probably not, but still a nice picture. However I judge on what I would hang in my apartment. I can only give you a 4 here.
