Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic, billed as the "soldier's camera" during WWI, took a special 127 film that you could use a stylus to write notations on the edges through a special window on the back.

Manufactured between 1915-1926, although this particular one was made sometime in 1915-16 - the owner scratched into the back of the camera all the locations and dates of (presumably) his deployment during WWI, as can be seen here:




A very homely looking camera isn't it? I guess for a wartime camera they were going for plain-but-serviceable.

The shutter is dead and gone on this little guy. It's just for display now.
