I thought I'd try to reproduce this poster, which has always been a memorable one for me since the film scared the peanuts out of my M&Ms when I was younger.
I made the ice cream by making salt dough, then scooped it out with an ice cream scooper and baked it all night on low heat to harden it up. I actually made about twelve of them, but selected this one since it had natural cracks in nearly the right places. I carved out a place for a tiny flashlight, which contributes the light to the ice cream scoop.
I then stuck my ice cream onto a skewer and mounted it on a black foam core board. I added light from the side with a larger flashlight. I did this in the hallway, by the way, and there was ambient light coming mostly from the left.
I mounted the grate (a shelf from the oven--I couldn't use the white ones from the freezer, but I hope that that's what is conveyed) onto a tripod in just the right position, then started fiddling with apertures and shutter speeds until it looked right. In the real poster, there is a cargo net under the egg, but I thought it would be fitting to stick with the kitchen theme. I burned the edges of the grate to give emphasize a triangular area "pointing" to the ice cream scoop, just like the original poster "points" to the egg.
Post processing was actually quite minimal, except that I dodged the semi circle in just above the grate, then shifted the color to green. I did the same with the area just under the ice cream scoop. |
