From the critique club:
There is too much ambiguity in this picture. It seems that you rushed or where very pressed for time because the basic requirements were ignored. Allow me to offer a few pointers.
Advertising are the hardest compositions to make. They are tedious to photograph because they require so much preparation. Be careful of introducing other elements. If you use a model, you complicate your life even more. The model must be dressed and now you need to capture the right expression. In this case, this attractive model was not ready for this promotion.
The sign in the back makes the viewer go to his face and then down the picture, but while the orange T shirt, adds color, the viewer has to pause and decipher it. Now the eye is at the pitcher and one wonders of this an ad for Smuckers and one relooks at the sign again.
In short, I note you have the capability to compose a shot, and yes, I know, sometimes ideas strike at the last minute. When they do, consider the time factor. If you are too pressed against the wall, it is best to forget it. Too late.
Do not feel too bad, all photographers experience similar situations. They proceed well knowing that important considerations will suffer. Just go and make your next challenge a winner. |

Yes, given his expression and his Tshirt, perhaps "Barker" would have been a good choice. :) |

From the beginning I questioned my choice in titles for this photo. I wished I had went with my other thoughts and called this something to the effect of Junior Acheivement or Enterprising Youth. I wasn't trying to sell the idea of Smuckers but rather the idea of a child wanting to work to make money.
The pitcher with Smuckers on it was used cause it was available and I just didn't have time to go to the store for a plain glass pitcher so I worked with what I had.
As for the comments about his expression....well as I took the photo he was standing there yelling...Lemonade 25 cents...one quarter, two dimes and a nickel, five nickels, or 25 pennies...Oh what a street barker I have on my hands....LOL

Charming. Nice colours. This shot should have been presented with a sound-track... I really like it! |

I love buying lemonade from kids on the street, they always seem a bit desperate for sales... He kind of looks a bit desperate. I like that look on his face, it adds interest. His shirt is a bit distracting, but can't be helped if this is a real kid selling lemonade. If you posed it, I'd have him wearing a solid color. |

What's with the expression? Not sure what this ad is supposed to say, right now it doesn't really draw me in at all. The picture is focused and centered, but nothing very exciting. |

Sorry, no. I'm sure this is a very sweet kid and you love him very much (judging by how often he turns up in challenges) but this is not an appealing photograph. You've made the kid more prominent than the product. Also, an advertiser wouldn't have a model wearing a shirt with a recognizable character unless that was part of the promotion.
After your angry PM I figured I would elaborate just so you realize I'm not prejudiced against kid photos. I was unsure in our PM comments if you meant that this was an photograph representing advertisement, i.e, the sign on the fence. If that is the case, then you missed the point of the challenge which was to take a photo of product in a way that sells the product. I'm still approaching this from the idea that this is an ad for Smucker's lemonade.
The Scooby Doo t-shirt is very bright, rather cheesy looking, and distracting. As I mentioned in my PM, child models are asked to wear simple, classic, clothing when the clothes aren't the product being advertised. I don't think it would be stretching the notion of realism to have the model wearing a sold, or classic striped t-shirt.
He doesn't actually look like he is selling lemonade because there are no Dixie cups or other type of disposable cups indicating this. There is only that one big glass. You asked if I had ever sold lemonade as a kid. I lived in the boonies as a kid so I sold flowers by the side of the road, not lemonade, but my kids sold lemonade when they were little and they used paper cups. It doesn't look like he is by a road it looks like he is in his backyard, judging by the fence and the glass table top.
The product is secondary to the model and that would never be the case in a real magazine ad.
The lemonade itself has not been photographed in a way to make me want to buy it. It should make me at least think about going to the fridge for a drink. There is very little detail to the pitcher or the glass. You liquid looks dull and opaque and the ice cubes look rather sad and depleted.
The model's expression really isn't all that appealing. His mouth is just sort of hanging open. His eyes are very dark and without a catch light to add sparkle, they appear hollow due to his rather squinty expression. I've tried to be as specific with my critique as possible so you understand that am not just randomly voting down photos with kids in them. |

Unless Scooby Doo has become the Smucker's spokestoon, the t-shirt detracts from the overall message. Otherwise, this is a good shot. |

You know, I really love this shot. If this were a TV ad, I can just imagine this boy playing the role of a true salesperson to get you to buy this lemonade. The photo captures my attention. Good photo for its own sake, too. This is a 9 in my book. |

A cross-processed look would have made it a 10, this way only 5. |
