So today was Pride.
Assuming that 90% of you all are straight, a bit of history... :) Gay pride is traditionally held on the last sunday of June in honor of the riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York in 1969. It was the tradition then that police would raid bars and clubs on whim and arrest anyone they thought even looked gay. That day, at Stonewall, the populous began to fight back. And thus began a big civil rights movement, still in progress to this day.
So anyway, me and my hubby (yes, we're both dudes) went to watch the parade. Seattle's parade is kind of blah compared to some, but I'm past the days when I fly into San Francisco or Toronto for a whole weekend of drunken debauchery. We stood at a corner where the parade route turned. I balanced on a little parking barrier to get me even six inches higher up. Each float came straight at us, silhouetted against a backdrop of dark trees.
It's not my best photo by any means. :P My first idea for this challenge was to make a nice portrait of my pretty little car, with my name on the license plate and everything. Unfortunately, my car is in the body shop (suicidal coyote on a rural highway late one night). I kind of struggled for other ideas.
But I'm feelin' rather blah this week. This fits my mood. And really, of all the ways I could iconically define myself, being gay is probably one of the more important ones. |
