 This species was first described by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758 as Gracula atthis.
The binomial name derives from the Latin alcedo, "kingfisher" (from Greek alkuon) and Atthis, a beautiful young woman of Lesbos, and favourite of Sappho.
