In early June, I flew to Biloxi Mississippi for a family wedding. I had some time to go to the beach and shoot. There were some locals sitting in a group talking about the oil spill. They were very upset, very agitated and started getting upset with me for taking photos.

"Tourists come here with their fancy cameras and take pictures. Then they leave and we have to live with this." That was the gist of the conversation. But then one woman turned to me and said, you better take pictures now before the oil comes. Which I did.

This is one of the many piers I saw that was destroyed during Katrina. Katrina still looms large in those parts and now the oil disaster. That's pretty much all anyone could talk about.

I don't know who that fellow is sitting there, but he added to the image with his red and white striped shirt. A second later he was gone between the pilings.

In the far back on the left you see a shrimper. I have other photos where you can see it more clearly. At that point they were still out. Don't know if they are now, about a month later.

Wow, a 5.42? This was one of a handful of 8s that I gave. Although the processing was a bit rough and the sharpening could have stood to be reworked, it's a strong image with a lot of solemnity, and the ruined pier is not the sort of thing you see every day. Really very nicely done.

Lovely composition, and as Peter noted, seems so sad, especially with your notes.

Seems a bit over processed to me. Like the shot though. Always has appeal to me but would have like it better if it looks a more realistic.

I like the way the sand, water, and sky all have the same choppy texture.
