Yes, I know its a flower. I dont normally photograph flowers so this was actually something different for me... flowers are something I am learning.

This was a fun challenge.... Im thinking this will land between 5.75 and 6.0 but we will see.

Expected comments:
Boring subject.
Not much detail in background.
Flower petals are a tad OOF (though this was on purpose)

I think this scored as it did because... well, from the crop you'd expect the main flower to be in focus, but it's the little buds to the right of it that are crispiest. the first thing my eyes look at are the large petals, and then I'm a little confused about why they aren't in focus, and then my eyes drift to the buds.
Crops are things I don't understand though. They have a tendency to make some look one way and others look another. This is how I looked at the shot.
The DOF is great in it though. Very shallow. But I don't know if it brought out the... right part due to the crop. Does this make sense?

The colour on the flower seems to be a bit dull and I think it would have been nice if the image was a little softer. Anyway this one is better than mine!

You got robbed. Not perfect, but I thought it was at least worth a low to mid 5. You can never tell.

Your DOF is certainly shallow here and it works for meeting the challenge theme. I think the composition would work better if the flower were emanating from the lower right corner, creating a diagonal. The lighting here is hard, but you can always use some type of light modifier to soften it, it makes a huge difference. They can be handmade and you don't need an expensive diffuser to soften the light. It looks like the brighter part of the flower is blown out; it would be nice to see detail there. Again, a light modifier would take care of that.

I like the idea of the buds/flower in various stages of development, and the colors are not overdone. That particular type of flower is just so showy, though, that it rather overpowers the buds, even being OOF. I like it, but I'd probably prefer it with most of the open flower cropped out. JMO.

The end result looks very good. You brought out lots of nice detail in those buds, which is what I like best about it. No vote, comment only.
