This was taken during the Scott Kelby's Third Annual Worldwide Photowalk. I was a little nervous at first because I’ve never done anything like this before. My apprehension went away however once we went around the group introducing ourselves. The demographic for the participants in the walk was surprisingly very diverse. There were professionals with their top-of-the-art equipments and families who just wanted to spend the day together. There were retired couples as well as children who looked no older than 7. There were art students with Holgas and hobbyists with their portable point and shoots. I decided to travel light and only brought my D60 and my new favorite lens, the 50mm (best $30 I ever spent!).

As we started the walk, we toured downtown Oakland, where we were surrounded by beautiful architecture. At this moment, I realized that I brought the wrong lens for this shot as it was extremely hard to get the whole buildings into the frame. In front some of the buildings though were some planters with various plants. So while everyone was shooting buildings and benches, I was focusing on random flora. This particular one was my favorite because of the colors. The orange in the background is a trash bin. The scene looked ordinary at best but shallow DOF creates interesting effects. The trick is finding a background which would make for a great bokeh. I also liked how each stalk seems to have their own unique character, which is somewhat reminiscent of the people in our group [hence, the (horrible) title]. I managed to get a few building shots as well but nothing really grabbed my attention like this one.

At the end of the day, everyone was talking to each other and having a good time. I (a self-admitted cynic haha) found it amazing how photography brought together total strangers, who seemingly have nothing in common. Needless to say, I will be joining again next year. =)

I never would have guessed this was taken in a downtown area. It's very pretty!

I loved this shot, great color, light and lines. I thought it was underrated.

Very nicely done, turning Equisetum/Horsetail into a horse of another colour. (Where I live it is ineradicable).

The otherwise mundane turns intriguing.

Very nice use of color. The red has an Asian feel and contributes well to the color of the bamboo. The smoothness of the bamboo is also well treated.

Good one!
