I saw a photo on flickr recently that I wanted to re-create (while possibly improving upon it slightly). I took this from the roof of the Monona Terrace, which looks over the John Nolan Path.
I like the water color and little bit of sun reflection in the original photo. Mine was taken on a windy/overcast day, so while the light is nicely diffused, I lose the serene feeling. However, I do like how I framed mine a bit different, especially with the S-Curve going through two corners (instead of how that is just missed in the original).
To help improve the photo in camera, I made use of Canon's PictureStyle feature of the 50D. I created a user defined Picture Style based on the Standard set. I bumped the sharpness from 3 to 6, increased the contrast from 0 to 2, and increased the saturation from 0 to 1.
Post Processing (GraphicConverter)
- Resized
- Used Sharpness Luminescence (this is standard sharpness, with only one slider to set the amount) with an amount of about 32%
This was an interesting challenge, and one of the most difficult for me so far. It definitely helped me to learn to be more patient with the composition, as no cropping was tough on me.

| Loving the diagonal and the bicyclist. I wonder if this would look stronger in BW with a tad more contrast to highlight the arrows and signs. |

| The image is better than the title choice. Light and colors are a bit flat, as they will be on a cloudy day. |
