I've noticed a lot of Nixter's photos over time without it ever clicking they were all from the same guy. Looking over his portfolio now, I think I have me a bit of hero worship. :)
What I see in his work is thus:
1. A love of chiaroscuro. Whether he does color, black and white, freeze frame, motion blur, crazy detail, or soft focus, one theme that permeates it all is a finesse on the play between light and shadow.
2. Equal concern in the photograph and in post processing. This is someone whom I think believes "reality is never good enough" when it comes to relighting a photograph. I respect that.
3. Ability to see the perfect framing to catch a moment. The goal of photography is to catch a moment, right? Nixter somehow finds the way to catch the moment reflected in a puddle with the sun dramatically setting behind.
So I went out street shooting. A lot of his work is street, right? I didn't have much of a direction to it, except I wanted to catch people framed incredibly well, and maybe work slow shutter just a little bit. I ended up with about five shots I liked (out of 150), and this one I think comes closest to representing what I see in his work. This was shot in the tourist district of my home city. I propped against a post to have some stability at 1/25 of a second. I was praying the whole time to the guy in red, "please don't wiggle, please hold that pose."
I think it's a pretty decent photo, I'm hoping for about a 5.5 on it. What I'm really hoping for is to catch Nick's eye enough to get some feedback from him on what he thinks of this shot, and how I developed it in post. :)
I did have to add my own twist, just to "sign" it. It's very subtle, but there's a tiny trace of a duotone on this. I use duotones a lot, and usually much more heavy handed than this. I guess it's a double wish. First I think the voters will punish anything that doesn't appear black and white. And second, I want to suggest to Nixter a technique he might consider to advance his art. :) |

Maybe it's the hood, but I find this a little disturbing. I'm feeling he has bad intentions...
