This challenge really got me thinking about colors and exposure, as I had no easy way to view negatives until after uploading and going thru multiple software programs to get to an inverted image. I was trying to invert colors in my head and guess at how things would look. I had a few ideas in my head of what might look good when converted to a "negative", but since I didn't really know, I was out shooting all kinds of things.

This image is actually a "happy accident". I was done shooting my primary subject, then went ahead and took a few more shots of things around me. I wasn't initially going for this image, but after doing a batch conversion of all of my images into negatives, this one just blew away everything else I'd been experimenting with. Then, my eye quickly saw the spider webs and other things I considered "blemishes", so I printed the original shot and took it with me as I went back out into my yard and picked away a bit of spider webbing on a tiny weed! I felt kind of silly doing that, but I was determined to get a cleaner version of what I already had. I uploaded a dozen more shots from the camera... converted... inverted... then went out again until I lost my light.

I went out again the next day, around the same time of day as the original shot, this time with the tripod, but I just couldn't quite get it right. I did end up with quite a few other shots that I thought looked really good as a negative, but none with quite the same look or colors. After sifting thru what was now 60+ images of weeds and mulling it over for a few days, I finally decided to go with the original, even with the "blemishes". There are others I really like, but none really have the same colors and interesting background as this one. I suspect some folks will also be distracted by what bothered me, but maybe I'll be partially forgiven due to Basic editing limitations. Heh.

I'm looking forward to sharing some outtakes/alternates. I may even make some nice big prints of some of the images I shot for this challenge to hang on my wall. My walls are bare and this is the first time I've wanted to decorate them with anything.

No edits... just resized, inverted, and added border. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Post challenge:

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments!

Here are the other candidate images I had for this challenge (probably in shooting order). I like all of these, but my entry was my favorite by quite a margin (hence all the re-shooting I did, and ultimately ignored). :)

Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impressions:
To be honest? This took my breath away! I loved it from the very first time I saw it.

Technical (Comp, lighting, color, focus):
The composition, the lighting, the color, the focus - including the bokeh - it's all marvelous. And your worries over the "distractions" were for naught as what you consider distractions only add to the image.

Challenge:
You certainly met the challenge and did so beautifully. AND I'm a title girl and this title is PERFECT!

Artistic/Emotion:
Artisticly? Stunning! Melethia nailed it in her comment below "the blues make this rich and vibrant, and the bokeh is lovely!"
Emotionally? This is a very soothing picture and I can so totally see why you are considering hanging it. I would if it were mine.

Summary:
I'm sorry to say that I have no suggestions for making this better. I may not have been the right one to give a critique of this image but as they are randomly assigned to us I was thrilled to be able to give you my thoughts on this image. I think posthumous and katenlow said it best with just one word....gorgeous.

I was about to say what Johanna said (tanguera) - blemishes quite often to me are features. They add life. This is wonderfully titled, too - the blues make this rich and vibrant, and the bokeh is lovely! Congrats on your new #1, too (though I still quite like your #2 shot, too!)

This one a few pix in this challenge that grabbed me. I would never have imagined that a bokeh can look that good!

To be honest I don't know what it is but I like it! Wish I would have voted in this challenge, I would have gave this a 9. Well done. (ps... I like the spiderweb so no worries about that.)

This works really well - I thought it would be a subject that would become too messy when turned negative but it looks great and I like the cool blue tones.
