Kaw Point is in Kansas City, Kansas and is part of the Lewis & Clark trail. Kaw Point is where Lewis & Clark stayed briefly during their expedition. More members of the Lewis & Clark expedition met at Kaw Point for this stay, than any other time during the expedition. 51 members of the expedition stayed at Kaw Point. And there are 51 stones representing the 51 members who stayed there. I say "members" because one of the members was Lewis's dog. The front row consists of 5 stones. York (Clark's slave), Clark, Lewis, Lewis's dog Seaman, and George Droulliard (a hunter and interpreter for Lewis & Clark). Those 5 stones face the other stones because that's how they would line up when they assembled each morning and addressed the Corp of Discovery (the other expedition members).
The fronts of the stones are the names of each of the 51 expedition members who met at Kaw point. The backs of the stones include names of significant donors who contributed to the monument.
The stones are a fairly new addition to the Kaw Point "Park". The stones were added in October 2009. Here's a few sites on the names on the stones which provide some hisotry on the Corp of Discovery members.

Kaw Point is an excellent place to take a shot of downtown Kansas City. However, it's not the safest place in Kansas City. I'd love to get a night shot, but I'm a little afraid to go down there. |
