One of an estimated 3,000 ponies found wandering freely in New Forest (Hampshire), around 70 miles south of London. Wild horses have been present here since as early as 1016. And while today's horses appear wild, grazing rights on forest land. The current breed of pony – predominantly brown, grey or chestnut – was deliberately created in the late 19th century, with characteristics being a long head, short neck and narrow body. The animals are valued for being intelligent, willing, docile and friendly, and so became known as a good children’s pony in the reign of James I, and remain so today. The ponies have actually shaped the look of the forest with their close cropping of the grass during the summer and their browsing of the gorse and holly in the winter.
Taken in full midday sun, backlit, with 580EX on camera at -1/3FEV I think. I'm on the shadow side of the horse, and without flash there'd be zero detail from this position. Flash needed to be nearly full power to overcome harsh sunlight. Shot handheld around 10' from the animal with 70-200 f/2.8L IS at 160mm.
The green around it's "lips" is from constant grazing and slight green color cast under the neck a result of the bright green grass reflecting light up. |
