 Isaac "doing math homework" in front of a large piece of white cardboard. Backlit with two CFL desk lamps, set custom White Balance on the cardboard.

Guided Isaac through the three poses: The Problem, The Eureka Moment, The Solution -- it took two "takes" to get all the elements within the frame without including the lamps.

I did this in silhouette partly for artistic reasons, but probably firstly because Isaac is too recognizable to model for me without some sort of disguise.

All of the shots received the same editing steps listed below; I even saved and used the same RGB tone Curve for all of them.

-Handheld, Manual mode
-Custom White Balance
-RGB Curve
-Crop to square
-Resize
-USM at 66%/0.6 dia/TH = 5
-Add borders
-Assemble into triptych format
-Save as JPEG at quality 10/10 = 93KB

I like the use of silhouettes in telling the story. Like how you used the lighting of the background, which gives slight illumination of the paper.
