...they toll for thee.
So, at the local Safeway grocery store, I had all the elements available for this photo. The pay phones were there. The Salvation Army lady was in place. I just had to bribe her ($5 in her kettle) to pose with the pay phones. She was reluctant. I captured six images before she lost patience. Only one usable image. But, I like it.
A paraphrase of John Donne's poem. And, an attempt at the humor of numerous "bell ringing" solicitations. And, then, the double entendre of "toll" comes into play. Yeah, I know, too clever by half. It depends on how many young people remember the Regional Bell phone companies. All of this "humor" may be lost on our non-US friends.
John Donne
Meditation 17
Devotions upon Emergent Occasions
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..."
lens focal length 40mm. Flash w/ Fong diffuser. Sorry about the flash reflections off a few reflective surfaces. It is a basic editing challenge, so I had to leave the eye glass spots in place. |
