Tinhole camera. A pinhole camera that I'm building from a simple tin box (the tin contained matching playing cards; I picked it up on vacation).

The inside of the tin and lid is painted black. The inside frame is made from balsa wood, also painted black, and held together with sewing pins. The vertical supports are covered with felt as these are what the film will rest on and slide over. New film goes on the left.

The white container with the piece of film visible is actually an empty 35mm film cartridge with spool. This is the take up. The new film will be cut vertical, pulled across the felt supports, and taped to the film that is visible.

The winder is a paper clip, shaped as needed. You see it goes through the tin, craft foam and frame, into the take-up spool. I'll probably shorten it, but you get the idea.

Finally, the black thing on the lid is a strip of film that will ride along the sprocket holes as the film is wound. Count eight "ticks" to get to the next frame.

I still have to build the pinhole (to go over the larger hole visible in the tin) and an exterior shutter that will mount over the bottom of the tin.

BTW, how did you rewind the film? Did you put another hole up top on the left?

Nope. I wanted to keep the mechanics simple. I open and rewind by hand in my darkroom. I risk fogging the film, as I don't know how dark my darkroom really is. I need a changing bag.

Changing bags are sort of cheap...$20 or so. Worthwhile investment for loading film tanks, and your need.

I see I was beaten to the pocket pinhole comment! Ha!

Oh man, a pocket pinhole camera! Dick Tracy rides again, but this time into the art world.

Have you tried this yet? I love the bit about counting 8 ticks!
