I’ve probably gone overboard with this shot trying to satisfy the various interpretations of an ‘effective out of balance’ photo. As a result those with a critical eye for challenge description requirements may focus on elements they consider DNMC. However, the way I look at it is that by being a little out of balance for various reasons may lead to an overall effective out of balance image. So in other words, this will either score really well or quite poorly.

My main approach was to go against some of the expected rules of photography such as the ‘rules of third’. My main subject is not exactly centred but too close to be comfortable and the image tilted to align with the Roller-Blader (my daughter). She was physically a little unbalanced when I took the shot which may meet some of the expectations of those who thought the challenge was meant to represent (incorrectly in my mind) an out of balance subject. I decided to inverse the image as it gives another dimension of being out of balance by making it less obvious what the main subject is but mainly because I wanted to make the shot more interesting (for me at least).

I can not predict how I believe this will finish as I’m not confident in my own interpretation of the challenge. I’ve either nailed it or missed by a mile. So I guess I’d be surprised if it finished in the 5’s.

For the first time in quite a while I didn't keep a record of my editting steps but I have never been asked for a validation. I bet it happens this time :-)

i dont really understand what is meant by balance, so i have just been looking at this as a free study, that being said, you will find this is probably not being recieved well, extreme processing is hard to work well

Surprising this is balanced to me - DNMC, nice textures though

Things look SO strange when they're inverted.

Great shot! The negative effect makes it even better. 8
